Mori is a spooky Oregon Trail-like game where you play as two body snatchers from 1800s Edinburgh selling cadavers to doctors for profit!  What these two crooks don't realize is that they're not the only monsters in this tale... skulk the streets, schmooze your way past suspicious eyes, and make as much money as you can!

Learning Programming

This game was one of the first projects that I've ever made solo! I've been interested in learning how to be more hands-on with game development. Learning more about programming and implementation seemed like a good path, and I ended up learning a lot about Godot and GDScript!

The Jam

Currently, the progress made is about a week and a half of work for a game jam, but I intend to continue development and expand Mori's gameplay! The theme of the jam was theft. I traveled to the UK and took a spooky tour about the dark history of Edinburgh, and one of the events mentioned was about body snatchers! When the theme was announced, I thought this would be a unique spin on the theme, as I imagined most games would be about typical theft of money or objects... not bodies!

I had been working on a couple of solo jams prior, but this one was the first where I felt I wasn't leaning too heavily on one tutorial. I had an idea and researched enough to piece it together!

The Results

I ended up getting voted #47 out of 200 entries overall, which I was proud of! I also got #6 out of 200 for the art specifically, which was a nice boost in confidence. It made me realize that, more and more, I'd like to lean into improving gameplay during these jams rather than relying on the comfort of the art and the overall narrative feel (my favorite part of games, usually). I'm confident that with more familiarity with the engine, I'll get there!
